The island of Zanzibar is situated about 36km (22 miles) off the Tanzanian coast. The city of Dar es Salaam is about 72km (45 miles) further south. Zanzibar is actually made up of 2 islands the other being Pemba Island.
Zanzibar Island is about 85km (53 miles) long covering an area of 1 464 square km. It is not a very big island, travelling around it might only take a day, but there is a tremendous amount of culture and atmosphere to enjoy.
The coastline has many beautiful beaches and coves, coral reefs and diverse marine life; it is a quiet island paradise of lush tropical vegetation where coconut palms, cinnamon, green cloves, rice and bread leaf grows in abundance.
