What to Expect on your Safari in East Africa

Tarangire elephant herdYour safari begins in Nairobi where you’ll board a light aircraft to the Masai Mara. In the Masai Experienced guides will take you to their favourite hidden spots for some fantastic all year round game viewing and photography.

Onto Tanzania, flying into Tarangire National Park, famed for its huge elephant herds, especially in the dry season, when elephants migrate into Tarangire for the life giving water from the perennial Tarangire River. Mara viewsYour next stop is the remarkable Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, camping for two nights in the crater rim valley, giving easy access to the crater floor. The crater is home to a large population of mammals permanently residing there. Giving all year fantastic wildlife sightings, including the big 5.

Fly into the Serengeti, staying three nights in the remote southern part. Ideal for seeing cheetah, with expert guides introducing you to the cheetah's habitat and explaining their behaviour.

Your final stop is in Saadani National Park, right on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Saadani National Park offers a unique safari experience in that it combines river, bush and beach habitats. Explore the area by boat, on foot and on game drives. The park is the only coastal wildlife sanctuary of its kind in East Africa, and is home to four of the big 5 (only the rhino is missing).

Day 1 - 3: Masai Mara GetawayView Lodge

Masaai cultural visit.From Nairobi fly into the Masai Mara, home to the great migration from June to October, and with plenty of resident wildlife all year around. Game viewing starts from the camp, situated right on the banks of the Mara River, a pod of hippos entertains you with their antics of trying to keep cool.

Spend your days on game drives traversing the rich ecosystems of savannah, riparian forest and woodland, watching a variety of game and birds.

Go on a cultural visit and learn more about the Maasai tribal way of life. Guided by a Maasai guide enter a Maasai village and experience first-hand this traditional culture, beliefs and customs. dine under the skyWalk with a naturalist, and learn more about the African plants and insects and their importance in maintaining this fantastic ecosystem and medicinal uses still used today.

An optional activity available is to watch dawn break, floating across the savannah in a hot air balloon, ending with a champagne breakfast out in the bush.

Day 4 - 5: Start of the Tanzanian OdysseyView Lodge

Tarangire elephants and baobab.From the Masai Mara, fly back to Nairobi to board your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your flight to Tarangire originates. The ultra modern camp is only a short drive away from the airstrip, in a secluded part of the park.

Marvel at the enormous baobabs dotted throughout the park. Meander along the riverbank, on game drives, observing the herds coming down to the water's edge to quench their thirst. Look up into the shady trees looking for languishing leopards, high in the branches. Search for kudu and oryx, great photogenic species with their ornate horns.

Relish bush picnics and sundowners, served in secluded clearings with sprawling vistas peppered with wild animals. Camp fire Tarangire.Feast on scrumptious three-course meals, served under an ancient baobab tree. Toast the day’s sightings around the campfire sharing tales with fellow travellers.

Day 6 - 7: Ngorongoro Crater DelightView Lodge

Ngorongro viewsA delightful road transfer following a curvy, twisting road as it winds its way up the ancient volcano, bordered by overhanging trees, follows a short flight from Tarangire to Lake Manyara. On reaching the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, your first game drive in the area begins as you make your way to the camp. After lunch and a short siesta, take a late afternoon game drive around the rim of the crater with an expert guide explaining the various animals behaviour to you

Go on a full day game drive down on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, leaving camp early to get that perfect morning light for some fantastic photographs. The diversity and abundance of game confined inside the crater will keep you in awe. Add to this the pure beauty, serenity and size of the crater, you’ll be forgiven for thinking that you have witnessed a piece of heaven here on earth.

Day 8 - 10: Serengeti Cheetah PlaygroundView Lodge

Serengeti cheetahAn early start takes you back down the twisting road to Lake Manyara airstrip to board your flight to the southern part of the Serengeti. Upon landing, a guide will transport you on a game drive to your next camp. Enjoy this secluded, remote part of the Serengeti with its abundance of wildlife and exceptional game viewing.

Spend your days crossing the vast plains watching and photographing cheetahs. Your expert guide will assist you in identifying known individual cheetahs, and teach you how to take photos that can assist with the ongoing cheetah research project performed in this area of the Serengeti. Serengeti night skyTake early morning and late afternoon game drives or full game drives with a picnic lunch searching for the many predators that inhabit this part of the park.

Between January and March, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle inundate the area as the great migration returns to these plains to give birth, en masse, in an attempt to confound the predators.

At night, take some time to stare up into the heavens and enjoy a cosmic safari, with the camp manager explaining the intricacies of the night sky to you, using a laser pointer to emphasis the constellations.

Day 11 - 13: Beach Time in SaadaniView Lodge

Saadani Beach viewTravel by air from the Serengeti to Arusha and on to Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s youngest national park bordered by the Indian Ocean.

Spend the next two days exploring the area on walking safaris, game drives and river safaris. Explore the wonders of the Wami River, fringed by date palms with kingfishers hovering over the water, ready to dive onto their fishy prey.

Chill out with a boat trip across the bay and picnic on a deserted sandbank. Snorkel, swim and sunbathe in the clear, warm Indian Ocean. Walk onto the pristine white beach and watch elephants playing in the waves. In this enchanting wildlife park, anything is possible.

Swim in the romantic rock pool; dine al fresco under shooting stars, feasting on fresh seafood. A great way to unwind and end a fantastic Colonial and Timeless East Africa Adventure.

Day 14: Dar es Salaam

With an afternoon flight to Dar es Salaam, enjoy the whole morning on a safari or languishing around the infinity pool watching the prolific birdlife and ocean. After lunch, board your flight to Dar es Salaam where this tour ends and your onward travel arrangements begin.
